{recipe} Swirly Christmas Sugar Cookies

Here’s another fun one for the holidays – swirly red and green sugar cookies! I love soft sugar cookies that melt in your mouth. They are so easy to make and getting this swirled effect is really simple to do. So pretty!

Basically, you make sugar cookie dough, then divide it into three logs. Color one log green and one log red. Stack the logs and twist them around one another a few times. Then roll that whole mess into a log.

Chill the log for awhile, or even overnight, then slice and bake. That’s it!

RECIPE: Swirly Christmas Sugar Cookies
makes about 40 cookies

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup (8 oz.) butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2¼ cups flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • red and green food coloring
INSTRUCTIONS
  • In a mixer, combine butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  • Add egg and vanilla and mix to combine well.
  • Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Divide dough into 3 portions. Leave one white. Gently mix red food coloring into one portion and green food coloring into the other portion.
  • Roll each portion into a thick log. Stack on top of one another. Give it a few folds and twists.
  • Separate dough into 2 portions and roll 2 logs, about 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill 1 hr or more (up to 24 hours.)
  • Preheat oven to 350º F. Prepare sheet pans or cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  • Slice chilled logs into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place on cookie sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned but still soft in the middle.
  • Cool on wire racks.
